The Mayor of Makassar, Indonesia, Mohammad Ramdhan Pomanto (also known as Danny Pomanto) and his team, visited Washington D.C. on July 24th, 2022. The U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of State’s U.S.-ASEAN Smart Cities Partnership jointly support pilot activities integrating new technologies, research, and industry to bring research and innovation to life through real-world projects in 5 ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) cities. The Smart Garden Alley project in Makassar, Indonesia, supported by Penn State University researchers, is focused on revitalizing alleys throughout the city to make them more livable while equipping them with technology to support their sustainability. The Smart Garden Alley project is currently focused on deploying a sensor network that helps detect foot traffic in alleys, air quality, and vitality of crops growing in these alleys. Additionally, they are working on increasing alley tourism which features alley-grown produce at local restaurants. Watch the video to learn more about the project directly from Mayor Pomanto:
